Interview with Chris Van Zile-Stabins

VZT:  How did you get started as a travel agent?

CVZ:  That’s a funny story – my father called one evening to see if I could come in and answer the phones until he hired a new receptionist.  I was recently out of college and was working at a local hotel in the evenings.  Needless to say, it became a permanent position shortly after.  I am blessed being able to see my family on a daily basis.

VZT: Okay – so how long have you been an agent?

CVZ:  I was a receptionist for a few years and actually taught myself how to work the computer.  Then my mother needed help in the Fairport location and I moved over there and became a full time agent.  It has been over 25 years now….I started when I was 10 obviously!

VZT: Where have you been and what is your favorite destination?

CVZ:  That is always a tough question and you will laugh at the answer. I have travelled extensively, but it is a big world and I still have lots of places to go!   I have just returned from a trip on the Danube River and enjoyed that tremendously but my all time favorite place is at our cottage in upstate New York!

VZT:  What is the strangest thing that has happened to you at work?

CVZ:  Strangest thing is when someone drove their car through the wall hitting my desk – while I was sitting there! Thank heavens for rollers on the chair and a very good guardian angel.

VZT:  What do you do with your free time?

CVZ:  I like to stay busy and I am currently the booster president for Canandaigua Academy’s Hockey Team.  I got involved with hockey at our local rink about 14 years ago when I coached my youngest.  Yes…that’s correct – I actually coached a team for 6 years and loved each one.  It has been a great way to get to know my community.

VZT:  And now – how about the personal info?

CVZ:  My husband Rich and I just celebrated our 24th anniversary!  We have 2 children, Keith (he just graduated from college) and Ben (he is going to be a senior in High School).  One dog and one cat!  I consider myself to be very lucky!

VZT: Words of wisdom?

CVZ: Donate your time when you can!  People appreciate it more than you know.  When you travel – pack light!
